NATO's role and mandate

NATO's long-standing role in supporting the UN, in particular, the decisive action undertaken in autumn 1995 during NATO's air campaign, Operation Deliberate Force, contributed to bringing the Parties to the negotiating table in Dayton, Ohio (USA), and to the successful outcome of the peace negotiations.

Under the authority of UN Security Council Resolution 1031, of 15 December 1995, NATO is undertaking the implementation of the military aspects of the Bosnian Peace Agreement, signed by all Parties to the conflict.

There are also civil aspects of the Peace Agreement, which are not part of the IFOR mission. One of the goals of the military mission, however, is to create secure conditions for others to carry out non-military tasks associated with the Peace Agreement.
