Karadzic refused to enter plea

Karadzic refused to enter a plea before the UN war crimes court in the Hague, calling it "a court of NATO". He claimed NATO is out to liquidate him. In accordance with tribunal rules, judge Iain Bonomy entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf.

Ethnically motivated clash in Mitrovica

Kosovo's police say at least four people were injured in a clash between ethnic Albanians and Serbs in the town of Mitrovica. The groups pelted each other with stones before NATO troops and UN police ended the violence.

Kosovo appointed ambassadors

Kosovo named ten diplomats to represent the country in Europe and the United States.

There will be two diplomats in the United States and one in each of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Austria, Turkey and Albania.

Vladimir Vukcevic speculates arrest Mladic could follow soon

Serbia's top prosecutor Vladimir Vukcevic told Reuters that Serbia is hunting for Ratko Mladic and that he expected his arrest might follow soon. Mladic's arrest was one of the conditions for Serbia to join the EU bloc.

Vukcevic said Serbia will crack down on anyone who helped war crimes suspects stay at large by providing fake identity documents.

Since Vukcevic took office in 2006, Serbia has arrested four out of six war crimes suspects and transferred them to the UN tribunal in the Hague.

Bosnia war suspect on trial in Norway

A Bosnian-born Norwegian citizen, Mirsad Repak, pleaded not guilty in Norway. He is accused of having mistreated civilian detainees during the Bosnian conflict in 1992, while he was a member of the paramilitary Croatian Defence Forces.

Norway adopted new laws dealing with war crimes, abolishing any statute of limitations.

Kosovo appoints its first ambassadors

Kosovo announced the names of the first 4 Kosovo ambassadors—to the US (Avni Spahiu), UK (Muhamed Hamiti), France (Muhamedin Kullashi) and Belgium (Ali Kryeziu).

Kosovo said it intends to soon open embassies in Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Turkey and Albania.

Serbia will offer Karadzic legal assistance

Serbia's ambassador to the Neterlands, Radoslav Stojanovic, said his government will soon offer Radovan Karadzic legal assistance in his defense against genocide charges.

However, he said he expected Karadzic to refuse to see him, because he had spoken critically of the Bosnian Serb leader in the past.

Postal war between Greece and Macedonia

Greek postal services have started to return letters to "Macedonia", only accepting the acronym for Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Macedonian postal services have started to return letters addressed to FYROM, explaining there is no country named "FYROM".

Trajkovic expects Belgrade to accept EULEX

Radmila Trajkovic, chairman of the Serbian National Council for Central Kosovo, said she expects that Belgrade will change its position regarding EULEX after the meeting of the UN General Assembly in September 2008. She said Belgrade is likely to make a deal with Ollie Rehn and Javier Solana to accept EULEX. "The UN Security Council is no longer a place where decisions are made, but a place where they are blocked, and therefore we need to turn toward the EU."

Macedonia rejects UN proposal in name dispute

Macedonian prime minister Nikola Greuevski rejected the latest proposal of UN mediator Matthew Nimetz in the name dispute with Greece.

"One of the ideas was to have a single name for international use. This is unacceptable for us," Greuevski said, "we agreed on certain issues, but this is something that we cannot accept. (...) There is no sense in continuing the negotiations."
