European rule of law mission EULEX commenced

The EU's rule of law mission EULEX officially took over from UNMIK. The first 100 members entered Kosovo's Mitrovica area. Initially, some 2,000 judges, prosecutors, police, customs and correctional officers will be deployed throughout Kosovo. EULEX will have an initial 3-year mandate and will consist of some 3,000 staff in 2009.

The 16,000 KFOR troops will remain in Kosovo. The UN will remain present in reduced capacity and will primarily play a political role.
