NATO and EU search Karadzic's family homes

In Pale, the homes of the wife and neighbour of wanted Bosnian war crimes suspect Radovan Karadzic's were searched by NATO and EUFOR to keep the pressure on. Karadzic, indicted by the War Crimes Tribunal, disappeared in 1996.

UN police officer died after riot in Kosovo

A Ukrainian policeman died from shrapnel wounds from a hand grenade suffered in clashes with Kosovo Serbs in Mitrovica. Over 130 people -- of which 41 policemen -- were injured after the UN took control of a courthouse that was seized by the Serbs earlier.

Ottawa informed the Serb ambassador Disan Batakovic that it formally recognizes Kosovo's independence from Serbia.

Members of the Parti Québécois in Quebec were quick to applaud the decision to recognize Kosovo's independence.

Trial of Jovica Stanisic and Franko Simatovic adjourned

The trial of Serbia's former intelligence chiefs Jovica Stanisic and Franko Simatovic was adjourned because lawyers for Stanisic said he was too ill to attend.

They are accused of directing Serbian forces that committed atrocities during the wars in the former Yugoslavia, including the 1995 Srebrenica massacre.

Early Serb election over Kosovo

Prime Minister Kostunica announced the collapse of the Serbian government. His cabinet failed to reject closer EU ties in protest over Kosovo's independence, after major EU countries recognized Kosovo as independent. Serbian President Tadic said he will call an early general election.

Netherlands, Sweden recognize Kosovo's independence

In Sweden, premier Frederik Reinfeldt and foreign affairs minister Carl Bildt announced the same.
